Ian Gill - Solo Euphonium Ian's association with YBS Concert Brass commenced in June 2003 when the band visited Hamm in Germany and he deputised on Euphonium. On the band's return, he was asked to join the band on a permanent basis and has been a loyal and committed bandsman ever since. In 2005 Ian became the band's principal euphonium player. Ian was born in Glasgow many years ago. On moving to Wombwell (South Yorkshire) as a child, he was taught to play the cornet in the local Salvation Army Young People's band but soon moved onto euphonium. Whilst at school Ian had the honour of being principal euphonium in the inaugural Yorkshire Schools Brass Band. Moving to Leeds to develop his career in Banking, Ian enjoyed a long association with the Leeds West Hunslet band of the Salvation Army, but this eventually came at a cost. His proximity to a boisterous trombone section resulted in the onset of the dreaded tinnitus, and Ian's first playing career came to an end. Some twelve euphonium-less years later and tinnitus now under control, Ian was invited to attend a reunion of Brass Impact, a Salvation Army group with which he had also enjoyed a previous association. The outcome was the re-awakening of an interest in banding and a desire to be re- acquainted with the euphonium. Eventually, sufficient confidence was achieved to commence a second playing career with YBS Concert Brass. Ian has retained his connections with Salvation Army banding and continues to play with a reformed Brass Impact group and the Yorkshire Fellowship band. |
